News and Updates

The Brehon Law Society of New York mourns the passing of our first President, dedicated civil and human rights leader and friend, General James P. (“Jim”) Cullen, Esq.

Jim passed away in his home in New York on December 8, 2017.

Jim was a Brigadier General in the United States Army having been drafted in his youth. He served in the Judge Advocates General’s Corp as Chief Judge of the U.S. Army Court of Criminal Appeals. He was a dedicated Human Rights lawyer and was one of the founding members of the Brehon Law Society along with Paul O’Dwyer and Frank Durkan in 1978. He was the Society’s first President.

Jim Cullen defended many Irish republicans in landmark cases in America. On a visit to the north of Ireland in the early days of the conflict, Jim saw for himself the subjugation of the nationalist population by British forces. Jim was passionate about ensuring truth and justice for all and he applied his considerable skill and influence to the cause of Irish reunification.

He became the President of Friends of Sinn Féin in 2012, carrying on the work of support for Sinn Féin in America. He has left a legacy of dedicated and determined work to expose the injustices of Britain’s rule in Ireland. He also made lasting contributions to the cause of human and civil rights in America and Ireland.

The Brehon Law Society send our sincere sympathies to Jim’s partner, Catherine Kelly, his entire family and to his friends and colleagues.

He was a true hero, gentleman, mentor, friend and advocate for peace and justice.

He will be greatly missed. May he Rest in Peace.

A Wake will be held on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 from 4-8pm at McMahon’s Funeral Home, 491 Mamaroneck Ave., White Plains, NY 10605.

The Funeral service is on Thursday, December 14, 2017 at 10am at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, 5th Avenue, New York, NY 10022.
